The Austin American Statesman just started a new monthly feature on cooking from the garden. The first installment covers basil: Finding cool ways to utilize garden's abundance of basil. It's a very timely article, since my basil in the community garden is flourishing now. Last week, I made basil pesto, which I served with angel hair pasta. I used the recipe I found here, and it worked great.

The drip irrigation for the hill side is complete. Mulching has been and is being done. Bob Mathis has gotten the eggplants and tomatoes that were in the green house planted as well. According to the National Weather Service, Georgetown has received 2.79 inches of rain (between 5:35 AM on the 11th and 6:35 AM on the 12th). It means that we need to be sure our mulch hasn't washed away and that the moisture that's fallen doesn't escape. So, take a few minutes and visit your plot and make sure the mulch coverage is still as it should be.

Preparing the first seedbed in the greenhouse. Two more will follow. These rocks were given after the Arts Festival last weekend. You may have to strain your eyes to see, but there is a sprout poking up through the mulch. This is *the* community garden. The clearing of it has begun, and the roto-tiller in the background will be brought to bear against it during the Feb. 21 meeting.

According to the National Weather Service (http://www.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KGTU.html), our garden got 9/10ths of an inch of rain between 3:55 and 5:55 AM this morning. Such a slow rain will hopefully help get those roots established for those who planted on Saturday, and will help get the soil moist for those who didn't.
